What does the “Bottle Meme” meme mean?
The trend serves as an open-ended collaborative art prompt rather than a narrative joke. By sketching a character wedged inside glassware, creators explore dynamic poses, chibi proportions, and light refractions. It expresses playful confinement and aesthetic curiosity, letting artists adapt their favorite figures to the visual boundaries of a transparent flask.
Where does the “Bottle Meme” meme come from?
The movement began on the Japanese creative community pixiv on April 2, 2009, when a user named Akabane (緋羽) uploaded an empty glass flask template. Labeled with the phrase “Tsumetemo Iinoyo” (You May Bottle Anything), the post encouraged fellow artists to edit its size, tweak its palette, and place any subject inside. The template migrated to deviantART in November 2009, followed by a surge in popularity on pixiv during the summer of 2011.
