What does the “It's absolutely beautiful” meme mean?
The humor lies in the stark contrast between the elegant phrasing and the gruesome context: marveling at a severed limb. Today, it is used to highlight absurdity, failure, or a disturbing situation with sarcasm. It allows people to laugh at mistakes without being mean, turning a negative observation into a stylish compliment. It is a subtle way of saying things are going wrong, but with grace.
Where does the “It's absolutely beautiful” meme come from?
The quote originates from the comedy film *La Tour Montparnasse Infernale*, directed by Charles Nemes and released in theaters on March 28, 2001. In the specific scene, characters played by the Témoins brothers discover a severed hand in an elevator. Éric Judor, playing the character Éric, reacts with enthusiasm by exclaiming: “Oh, but it’s absolutely beautiful!” This juxtaposition of polite language against visual horror left a strong impression. Although the film is well-known, no source traces the exact digital birth of the meme or cites a specific starting platform. The phrase remained a memorable citation before being spontaneously reused in daily conversations and social media.
