What does the “Ça va être genre historique” meme mean?
The line expresses over-the-top excitement: something will be memorable and you ought to know it in advance. The word “genre” adds a casual, almost teenage tone that clashes with the heavy word “historique”. Used ironically, it announces a meal, a game with friends or a simple meeting as if it were a feat. It works because it mixes the grandeur of rap battles with very spoken, spontaneous speech. It says: get ready, this will matter.
Where does the “Ça va être genre historique” meme come from?
The phrase is credited to Dony S, a French rapper known in the world of Rap Contenders, the French-language rap battle competition. He appeared in several editions, including against Wojtek in edition 4 and RES in edition 8. In that scene he is known for the way he hypes clashes, with this enthusiastic line becoming his trademark; it comes back in his reactions to the line-ups of later editions. Fans clipped it into a YouTube video named after the phrase and described as Dony S’s famous line. The expression then left rap to exaggerate any announcement.
