What does the “Logan Paul in Japan” meme mean?
The reference points to the perceived exploitation of a suicide for online attention. It can be used to criticize content seen as insensitive, or to recall a controversy about the pursuit of viral fame. Because it concerns a real death, it should be handled with care rather than used to mock the person who died.
Where does the “Logan Paul in Japan” meme come from?
The reference comes from Logan Paul’s vlog “We found a dead body in the Japanese Suicide Forest...”, posted on YouTube on December 31, 2017. Filmed in Aokigahara forest, near Mount Fuji, it shows Paul and several friends coming across the body of a man who had died by hanging. The video includes footage of the body, with the face blurred. It drew widespread criticism, including for presenting the discovery sensationally and joking at the scene. Paul removed the video the day after it was posted. A mirrored copy later circulated on LiveLeak. The meme therefore refers to a real controversy, not to an identified sketch or television show. The available sources do not explain how later images or captions reused the episode.
