What does the “#voxmenteur” meme mean?
This hashtag expresses a severe internal conflict within a French-speaking creative community. It symbolizes the breakdown of trust between founders and collaborators, turning a professional dispute into a public scandal. The dominant emotion is perceived betrayal by former members, who denounce abuse of power and embezzlement. For the public, it represents the archetype of YouTube 'drama' where official statements are challenged by damning testimonies.
Where does the “#voxmenteur” meme come from?
The controversy erupted in May 2019 on YouTube. On May 22, a promotional video was published on the VoxMakers channel without Thomas Cyrix's consent, which he had blocked. On May 23, four former collaborators—Ermite Moderne, MJ Fermez La, Shindehai, and Sasha Brown, from the group Starrysky—published coordinated videos. They lasted a total of two hours and thirteen minutes. They accused Cyrix of financial manipulation, unfair dismissals, and moral harassment. The following day, May 24, Thomas Cyrix responded with a twenty-nine-minute video to contest these accusations. The hashtag #voxliar, a play on words between VoxMakers and liar, then qualified the accusatory campaign. Sources do not allow for certain identification of the term's original author or a specific show that launched the trend.
