This meme embodies self-deprecating humor and boundless fan creativity. Where does the “Cardboard Box Gundam” meme come from?
The photo comes from Anime Central 2003 in Rosemont, Illinois. Paul M. Palgen, a *Final Fantasy VII* enthusiast, saw his Zack Fair costume become unusable. His sister suggested he wear a cardboard box and call it a Gundam. The image was shared on the Japanese host pya! on October 13, 2003. Japanese imageboards immediately adopted this homemade chaos, creating the term "Hako Gundam." This spontaneous rejection launched a wave of visual parodies without ever targeting a specific robot model.
