In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Champions du monde 2018” is a mythic card of the Memes FR pack, number 723 of the collection, and the 40th best-known meme of its 869 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Champions du monde 2018” meme mean?
The phrase became a line of its own, used far outside sport. It celebrates a win out of all proportion to the stakes, reminds someone of a success they would rather forget, or ends a conversation with something that is not an argument at all. That is the fate of collective-jubilation references: they outlive the event and turn into a way of saying “we won, and I have no intention of moving on”. In France the night is common property — almost everyone has a version of it, filmed in the street or in front of a screen.
Where does the “Champions du monde 2018” meme come from?
The 2018 World Cup final was played on 15 July 2018 at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow between France and Croatia. Croatia dominated the opening but conceded first through an own goal by Mario Mandžukić, following a free kick from Antoine Griezmann, who was named man of the match. In the second half Paul Pogba and then Kylian Mbappé took the score to four-one, and it finished four-two. It was France’s second world title after 1998, hence the “second star” on the shirt. The card is built on a YouTube video from that night, and it is the only mythic-rarity entry in its batch under the project’s popularity ranking.
