What does the “Chunk Addresses Congress” meme mean?
The image captures the frustration of someone whose advice was disregarded until disaster struck. By placing a childish character in a serious political setting, it creates humor through contrast between naive delivery and grave context. The dominant emotion is resentment mixed with vindictive satisfaction: the protagonist finally exposes their companions' fault publicly. It serves as visual poetic justice, where the character's initial humility highlights the importance of neglected messages.
Where does the “Chunk Addresses Congress” meme come from?
The meme originates from a YTMND site created in December 2005 by user KingCrimson. It repurposes an image from a joint session of the US Congress presided over by George W. Bush. The character Chunk, from the 1985 film The Goonies, is cut out and superimposed. The original audio clip, whose precise video source remains unknown, features the boy reproaching his friends for ignoring his warnings. YTMND allowed combining static images, animated text, and looping audio. The original site was deleted after KingCrimson’s account suspension. It was restored on January 6, 2007, by user BTape. The format quickly generated over one hundred variants in a week, then more than 540 parodies on the platform, featuring various characters or celebrities with dubbed voices and echo effects.
