What does the “CNN Chyron Parodies” meme mean?
This format expresses ironic mockery of television journalism conventions. It creates voluntary cognitive dissonance: maintaining the serious appearance of a news report while replacing the substance with anything goes. The intended emotion is dark or absurd humor, highlighting the meaningless or exaggerated nature of shock headlines broadcast on television.
Where does the “CNN Chyron Parodies” meme come from?
The source image comes from a *CNN News Now* video covering the arrest of drug trafficker Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán. It features anchor Lynda Kinkade on the left and police escorting the accused on the right. The video was uploaded to YouTube by user LK TJ on January 9, 2016. The format became a meme on May 29, 2017, when a Reddit user named King_of_Connaught posted a edited thumbnail on r/dankmemes. In this viral version, Lynda Kinkade is kept, while the character Wario is added in front of Saint Basil's Cathedral, with the text: "ANONYMOUS SOURCES SAY GREEDY LIBERTARIAN WARIO HAS TIES TO RUSSIA". The principle involves keeping the image composition and the anchor's impassive expression, then replacing the image or CNN banner with an unlikely association. Available sources describe the format usage as a series of parody screenshots or montages; they do not provide additional rules, a single creator after the first example, or a specific video or show beyond CNN News Now. For these elements: unknown.
