What does the “Creepy Joe Biden” meme mean?
This format expresses discomfort with unsolicited intimacy or excessive familiarity in formal settings. It captures the unease caused when someone crosses personal space boundaries without consent. The humor stems from the contrast between the solemnity of presidential duties and the sometimes clumsy spontaneity of the subject's gestures.
Where does the “Creepy Joe Biden” meme come from?
The phenomenon solidified in early 2015 around two specific incidents. The first occurred on January 6 during the swearing-in of senators. Biden leaned towards Maggie Coons, daughter of Senator Chris Coons, to whisper in her ear before attempting to kiss her cheek. She pulled away sharply, creating a powerful image of involuntary rejection. The second key moment took place on February 17 at the White House. During Ashton Carter’s investiture as Secretary of Defense, Biden placed his hands on his wife Stephanie’s shoulders and whispered to her for an extended period. These scenes were quickly captured by official photographers and spread massively online. Reddit platforms, particularly r/cringepics and r/gifs, along with Twitter, served as primary vectors. Blogs like BuzzFeed and Mediaite also relayed these images, helping to popularize labels like 'Creepy Joe' or 'Inappropriate Joe'. Virality came from the repetition of behaviors perceived as intrusive by a large part of the online audience.
