What does the “Dez Gougnaffiers” meme mean?
The line corrects an accusation with comic precision: not amnesiacs, but gougnafiers. “Gougnafier” means a clumsy, coarse or worthless person, and the garbled “Dez” spelling marks it as cult movie speech. As a meme, it is used with a mock-medieval tone for people messing everything up, a disorganised group or friends making fools of themselves. It expresses affectionate teasing, backed by the film’s facial acting.
Where does the “Dez Gougnaffiers” meme come from?
Les Visiteurs is a French film directed by Jean-Marie Poiré, released in France on 27 January 1993 and co-written with Christian Clavier. The knight Godefroy de Montmirail, played by Jean Reno, and his squire Jacquouille, played by Christian Clavier, are flung from the twelfth century to 1992 by a botched potion. Their descendants struggle to make sense of the time clash. The sequence “Vous n’êtes tout de même pas amnésique à ce point-là ? / C’est pas des amnésiques…” leading up to “gougnafiers” circulates on YouTube in clips named after the word. The film produced a long list of memorable lines that people still quote.
