What does the “Etchebest” meme mean?

The Etchebest meme shows a strong reaction to something gone wrong: a ruined dish, a clumsy mistake, a baffling decision. Everyone recognizes the look of a demanding professional discovering a disaster, which makes the image universal. People send it to comment on a failure, judge a dubious meal, or express dismay without a word. It also works ironically, when the result is great but you pretend to be strict. One of his most shared lines is “On est tous dans la merde”, now a classic of the genre.

Where does the “Etchebest” meme come from?

Philippe Etchebest was born on 2 December 1966 in Soissons. A Meilleur Ouvrier de France in cuisine in 2000, he earned his first Michelin star in 2001 at the Château des Reynats in Chancelade and a second in 2008 in Saint-Émilion. He has hosted Cauchemar en cuisine on M6 since 18 April 2011, an adaptation of Gordon Ramsay’s British series in which he helps struggling restaurants. He has been on Top Chef since season 2 in 2011 and on the main jury since 2015. These widely watched shows produced many reaction scenes that were clipped and remixed online, all the way to absurd YTP-style edits. Konbini has run an interview with him about his own memes.
