What does the “Facebook Timeline Covers” meme mean?
This format allows users to play with perspective and framing to create optical illusions or fictional interactions between two distinct elements. The user expresses creativity by integrating their portrait into a wider scene, turning their personal space into a visual composition shared publicly.
Where does the “Facebook Timeline Covers” meme come from?
This trend emerged directly from the launch of the 'Timeline' feature on Facebook, officially announced at the F8 conference on September 22, 2011. Mark Zuckerberg presented this new layout as a narrative of the user's life, featuring a large cover area at the top of the profile. The precise source of an initial creator is unknown; it was a collective appropriation of the tool. Users quickly discovered that the profile picture overlapped the bottom left corner of the banner (851 × 315 pixels). This interface encouraged designing images where the avatar seemed to interact with the background scenery, generating a wave of massive personalized creations in early 2012.
