Where does the “Fidget Spinners” meme come from?
The modern toy is sometimes linked to Scott McCoskery, who allegedly created the Torqbar around 2014, although it had only two arms. Another attribution to Catherine Hettinger via her 1997 patent is contested as it described a different object. A video by YouTuber Sam KenKnight, published on July 19, 2016, shows a trick with a spinner and surpassed 590,000 views in nine months. The frenzy accelerated in April 2017 with a sharp increase in online searches. YouTube then spread videos of challenges and tricks, such as spinning the object on the nose or forehead, getting millions of views. Sources do not demonstrate TikTok's initial role in this 2017 wave.
