What does the “Fuyez, pauvres fous !” meme mean?
The line condenses the moment the wise wizard realises the situation is beyond everyone. It is used to warn, with great emphasis, that trouble is coming: a surprise inspection, a brewing argument, a far-too-spicy dish. The gap between fantasy epic and everyday stakes is the joke. It can also serve as a mock-solemn warning to friends who keep ignoring obvious advice, right before they face the consequences.
Where does the “Fuyez, pauvres fous !” meme come from?
The line comes from The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, directed by Peter Jackson, which had its world premiere in London on 10 December 2001. In the Moria sequence Gandalf faces the Balrog on the bridge of Khazad-dûm. He breaks the bridge, and the two fall into the abyss. In the French version the phrase uttered before the fight became a classic, and it is reposted in countless extracts of the scene on YouTube. It then left the film behind and became a joke formula in chats, image captions and video edits.
