What does the “Han Ouais” meme mean?
Said with a drawl, “Han ouais” means roughly “oh really?” with a dash of irony and weariness. People use it when someone offers a flimsy excuse, states the obvious, or claims something hard to believe. The meme lives mostly through intonation, which explains the remixes and impressions made from it. It works in writing as a comment as well as out loud, imitated with a Belgian accent.
Where does the “Han Ouais” meme come from?
The card describes a hilarious reaction from a young man being judged in the Charleroi court. The clip led to many online reuses: a long version, a rap remix, impressions by comedians and creators, some reaching millions of views. Videos about the same city mention fast-track criminal hearings, which places the scene in a courtroom setting. The “Han ouais” then left the court behind to become a common interjection.
