What does the “iPhone pillé” meme mean?
The meme pokes fun at the gap between a looter's excitement at making a great catch and the reality: a locked or remotely disabled demo phone that's worth nothing once it's out of the shop. People use the card to illustrate a win that turns into disappointment, whenever someone celebrates a supposed gain too soon, only for it to turn out worthless.
Where does the “iPhone pillé” meme come from?
In 2023, following the death of Nahel Merzouk, shot by a police officer in Nanterre, riots and store lootings broke out in several French cities, including Lille. Videos filmed during these lootings showed people grabbing iPhones displayed in stores, unaware that demo phones are protected by anti-theft systems that render them useless once removed from the shop. These widely shared and commented videos gave rise to the meme that mocks this failed theft, a symbol of a gain that turns out to be completely worthless.
