In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “J’ai glissé, chef!” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 2042 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3502 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “J’ai glissé, chef!” meme mean?
The phrase is a subordinate’s alibi in front of a superior: an excuse too convenient to be believed. The feeling is the comedy of bad faith, with a touch of nostalgia for popular French cinema. People use it to justify themselves after a mistake, to mock someone dodging blame, or to answer a boss, a parent or a teacher with a deliberately absurd excuse.
Where does the “J’ai glissé, chef!” meme come from?
The film “Mais où est donc passée la septième compagnie ?”, directed by Robert Lamoureux, was released in France on 13 December 1973. Set in June 1940, it follows three soldiers who slip out of a German encirclement: Pithivier (Jean Lefebvre), Tassin (Aldo Maccione) and Sergeant-Chief Chaudard (Pierre Mondy). Tassin is a soldier from Nice, and his line “J’ai glissé, chef!” remains one of the most quoted of the series. Viewers made edits and compilations of cult lines, and the phrase now lives outside the film as a proverbial excuse.
