What does the “Je m'appelle Marcel Patulacci” meme mean?
The humor lies in the contrast between the hierarchical military rank (“head constable”) and the generic, peaceful function (“peace officer”). It satirizes bureaucratic pretension and empty official speeches. Online, this quote is used to parody formal introductions, mock someone taking themselves too seriously, or simply reference this absurd moment from 1990s French comedy.
Where does the “Je m'appelle Marcel Patulacci” meme come from?
The “La Police” sketch is part of the repertoire of Les Inconnus, a major French comedy trio. It is presented as a fake news report broadcast by F3 Île-de-France, following a local police station for twenty-four hours. The character named Marcel Patouacci (often misspelled as Patulacci) is played by one of the group members. In the scene, he introduces his role with excessive gravity: “I’m called Marcel Patouacci, head constable and peace officer first and foremost.” This line captures the absurdity of bureaucracy and the solemn tone of media institutions of the era. Although widely shared on YouTube today, the exact date of its initial television broadcast remains uncertain in accessible sources. A file mentions a similar character in *News Items* (1983), but no documented link is established with the Les Inconnus sketch.
