Where does the “Jean Lassalle Se Canto” meme come from?
Jean Lassalle, born in 1955 in Lourdios-Ichère, became MP for the fourth constituency of Pyrénées-Atlantiques in 2002. On 3 June 2003, during questions to the government, he stood up and sang “Se Canto”, a song attributed to Gaston Fébus and regarded as the anthem of Occitania, while Nicolas Sarkozy had the floor. He was protesting a plan to house the gendarmes guarding the Somport tunnel away from the village of Urdos, and the wider loss of public services in rural valleys. Deputies laughed, Assembly president Jean-Louis Debré asked him in vain to sit down, and France 2’s evening news covered it the next day. The gendarmerie was ultimately kept, and INA’s archive footage still resurfaces online.
