What does the “Kim Jong Un Looking At Things” meme mean?
This format exploits the visual absurdity of totalitarian propaganda. By isolating images where the leader inspects factories or tools with extreme gravity, the meme highlights the comedic gap between the importance assigned to tasks and their actual triviality. It transforms authoritarian staging into dark humor, exposing the inherent ridiculousness of these power rituals without direct commentary.
Where does the “Kim Jong Un Looking At Things” meme come from?
The specific origin of this variant dates back to December 18, 2011, on the Tumblr platform. It was launched just hours after the official announcement of Kim Jong-il's death. The project continues the legacy of the 'Kim Jong-il Looking at Things' meme, created by Portuguese architect João Rocha in October 2010. That earlier work already used official photographic archives to create a similar humorous series. The Kim Jong-un version follows the exact same procedure: using official snapshots showing the new leader inspecting various industrial or institutional sites. The lack of explanatory text in the original posts enhances the absurd nature of these meticulous inspections.
