What does the “la balayette de fekir” meme mean?
In football slang, a “balayette” is a sliding tackle meant to sweep the ball or the opponent away. Linked to Fekir, the phrase is used, admiringly or jokingly, to describe any uncompromising defensive move that simply “sweeps away” the action in progress, sometimes with little regard for subtlety.
Where does the “la balayette de fekir” meme come from?
Nabil Fekir, a French international footballer born on 18 July 1993 in Lyon and playing as an attacking midfielder, is known for notable defensive interventions as much as for his attacking play. A clip of him executing a particularly sharp sliding tackle on an opponent circulated on social media and football highlight channels, becoming a shared reference known as “la balayette de Fekir.” The phrase has since broken away from that specific moment to describe, more broadly, any radical tackle that cuts a play short.
