What does the “Ronaldo's Haircut” meme mean?
People bring it up to mock an extreme or baffling hairstyle, on a celebrity or on a friend. It also works as shorthand for the idea that a tiny absurd detail can overshadow a major achievement, since Ronaldo dominated that tournament while everyone talked about his hair. The phrase pops up under photos of a botched haircut or whenever someone compares a bold style to the Brazilian's unmistakable look.
Where does the “Ronaldo's Haircut” meme come from?
Ronaldo Luís Nazário de Lima, the Brazilian forward born in 1976, showed up at the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea with his head almost entirely shaved except for a small triangular patch left above his forehead. Rumors at the time suggested he was hiding an injury or a scar under the tuft, but Ronaldo later explained he simply wanted to shift media attention away from the knee injury that had put his participation in doubt, so journalists would talk about his haircut instead of his shaky comeback. Brazil won the tournament and Ronaldo finished as top scorer, making the haircut inseparable from that triumph. The image has circulated for years since, becoming a go-to reference in lists of sport's most commented hairstyles and in comedic edits online.
