“La soupe aux choux” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “La soupe aux choux” meme mean?

The film blends rural comedy with offbeat science fiction: two farmer friends, prone to flatulence and friendly bickering, welcome a visitor from elsewhere who takes an interest in their simple way of life. The contrast between the two men’s down-to-earth world and the alien’s presence creates an absurd comedy that became a cult classic in France. Lines and scenes from the film are referenced with fondness and self-deprecation to evoke an old-fashioned rural life, or any absurd situation where two worlds with nothing in common collide.

Where does the “La soupe aux choux” meme come from?

“La Soupe aux choux” is a French film directed by Jean Girault, released in 1981, adapted from the novel by René Fallet. It follows two elderly farmers, played by Louis de Funès and Jean Carmet, whose daily routine of cabbage soup and flatulence is disrupted by the arrival of an alien who has come to observe their way of life. The film was a major popular success in France on release and became a classic, regularly rebroadcast on television, which cemented its scenes and lines in popular culture. Its title and imagery are still referenced today, captioning a rural or absurd scene, long after it first screened in cinemas.
