What does the “Luigi's Casino” meme mean?
The meme captures the guilty pleasure of losing while having fun: the tune is cheerful, but Luigi as dealer quickly cleans out whoever sits at his table. People use it to comment on impulse spending, failed bets or machine addiction, with a light tone that masks the defeat.
Where does the “Luigi's Casino” meme come from?
Super Mario 64 DS, a remake of Super Mario 64 developed by Nintendo EAD, launched in 2004 in the United States and Japan, then in 2005 in Europe. It adds 36 touchscreen minigames, unlocked by catching rabbits, some of them casino games. The gambling theme was strong enough that South Korea required those minigames to be removed for an all-ages rating, and PEGI, which first rated the game for all ages, judged a re-release unsuitable for players under 12. New Super Mario Bros. later reused several of the minigames. The casino theme, looped endlessly on YouTube, did the rest.
