What does the “Jul hand sign” meme mean?
The gesture signals support for Jul and a connection to his fan community, known as the “Team Jul.” Its three hand shapes spell the rapper’s initials, making it a visual signature rather than a spoken slogan. Fans use it to show their allegiance or refer to his music. Claims that it is France’s, or even Europe’s, most famous symbol are enthusiastic descriptions, not established facts.
Where does the “Jul hand sign” meme come from?
The sign is associated with Jul, a rapper from Marseille, and his fan community. It is formed in three parts: the left hand makes a J, the space between both hands suggests a U, and the right hand makes an L. The available information does not identify a first video, TV appearance or exact date for the gesture’s debut. It became a distinctive mark of the artist and was widely reproduced by fans. In November 2024, a TikTok trend brought it back in videos inspired by the cover of Album gratuit, vol. 2, released in 2016. That artwork shows Jul’s hands making the sign amid flames. Some teenagers recreated the imagery using flammable products. The trend reportedly began in Germany in mid-November before spreading to France. Jul asked fans to stop taking part in the dangerous practice.
