What does the “Fortnite Black Hole” meme mean?
The meme captures a dramatic event shared by a gaming community, followed by the suspense of the game’s disappearance. “You had to be there” frames it as a collective experience that is hard to explain to people who missed the live moment. Depending on the context, it can convey nostalgia, amazement, or playful exaggeration about the importance of a memorable gaming event.
Where does the “Fortnite Black Hole” meme come from?
The meme refers to “The End,” an event organized by Epic Games to close Fortnite Season 10. On Sunday, October 13, 2019, a meteorite and then an explosion destroyed the virtual island; the game and its players were subsequently pulled into a black hole. Fortnite then remained inaccessible for more than forty hours. The sequence was streamed live on YouTube and Twitch, where more than six million viewers watched it, according to estimates cited by Le Monde and France Inter. The meme did not originate in a TV show or with a specific person: it draws on a scene from the game itself. The exact source of the French wording “Le trou noir de Fortnite” is unknown.
