In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Medusa” is a rare card of the Memes World series 77, number 22843 of the collection, and the 45th best-known meme of its 141 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Medusa” meme mean?
This format expresses vulnerability transformed into raw strength. Where ancient myth punished the victim, modern memes celebrate resilience. The “gaze” no longer freezes the adversary in fear but reveals a hidden truth or painful past. The dominant emotion is collective empathy, mixing sorrow with pride in overcoming the unspeakable. It is a silent cry asking to be heard without judgment.
Where does the “Medusa” meme come from?
The exact origin of the humorous text about the moving hairstyle remains unknown in documented sources. However, the meme primarily anchors in the TikTok phenomenon called “Meeting Medusa,” appearing late August 2022 with a video by @saskiaalzhr posted on September 7, 2022, and popularized early October 2022 by @hellokittymybff. This format combines static images and narrative texts recounting experiences of sexual violence. Its meaning draws from reinterpreting the Greek myth: Medusa, initially a victim of rape before being cursed, becomes the symbol of survivors. The Gorgon no longer embodies monstrosity but the legitimacy of victims' voices, reversing traditional victim-blaming to offer a space for empathetic recognition.
