What does the “Schwör auf Big Mac” meme mean?
The phrase is used to back up a statement with comically exaggerated seriousness, replacing a usual oath (on someone's life, on one's soul) with an everyday object, here a fast-food burger. The joke sits in the clash between the solemn act of swearing and the triviality of a Big Mac as the supreme reference point, a familiar device in German internet humor that borrows serious-sounding formulas and applies them to ridiculous objects.
Where does the “Schwör auf Big Mac” meme come from?
The line “Schwör auf Big Mac” comes from a German comedy video released under that title, where the classic oath is twisted into swearing on a Big Mac instead of something serious. It has since circulated as a screenshot and a quoted line reused in other videos and sketches built on the same sentence structure, notably under the name associated with the clip, “Nikolausgangster”. The format remains a short, easily quotable line that kept being reused in later posts and video titles, though no exact first broadcast date could be pinned down.
