In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Absolut reines Gewissen” is a rare card of the German Memes pack, number 101 of the collection, and the 39th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Absolut reines Gewissen” meme mean?
The line always lands when it comes out at the worst possible moment: the more suspicious the situation looks, the more hollow the claim of a clear conscience sounds, and that gap is exactly what makes it funny. People use it to comment, whether quoting themselves or someone else, on a denial that nobody actually buys. The tone stays light — it is not a real accusation, just a smiling way of pointing out that the excuse does not hold up.
Where does the “Absolut reines Gewissen” meme come from?
The phrase “Absolut reines Gewissen” has circulated in German-speaking online spaces since 2000, at a time when the set expression “reines Gewissen” (clear conscience) was already common in everyday speech for total absence of guilt. The meme intensifies it with the adverb “absolut,” turning it into a line that sounds almost too perfect to be believed. Used as a caption under an image or as a reply to an ambiguous situation, it mocks overly categorical denials, the kind that insist so hard on their own sincerity that they raise suspicion instead of lowering it. Its staying power comes from its simplicity: a short line that fits under any ambiguous scene without needing further explanation to land.
