In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Doppel-Wumms” is a common card of the German Memes pack, number 105 of the collection, and the 150th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Doppel-Wumms” meme mean?
The phrase originally named a huge financial aid plan, but it is now used, mockingly or admiringly depending on the tone, to highlight the announced scale of a decision, whether political, budgetary, or even personal. The word “Wumms” mimics the sound of a powerful impact, and doubling it stresses how big the promised effect is supposed to be. People bring it back whenever an announcement aims to sound spectacular, to joke about the possible gap between the staging and the actual result.
Where does the “Doppel-Wumms” meme come from?
In September 2022, German chancellor Olaf Scholz used the word “Doppel-Wumms” to describe an energy shield plan meant to protect households and businesses from soaring gas and electricity prices, amid that year's European energy crisis. The phrase, both casual and vivid, stood out against the usually sober language of government announcements, which helped it spread widely across media and online discussions. It eventually landed on lists of the year's most quoted and mocked expressions, becoming shorthand for any political communication leaning on the announcement effect more than the actual details of the measures.
