What does the “Conni entdeckt das Internet” meme mean?
The meme plays on the gap between Conni, a children's literature character who stands for innocence and small everyday lessons (potty training, school, the dentist), and the supposed brutality or chaos of the internet. The "Conni discovers" format mimics the series' usual titles about small life milestones and applies it to a much broader and unexpected topic, which is exactly the comic effect its creators were going for.
Where does the “Conni entdeckt das Internet” meme come from?
The "Conni entdeckt das Internet" meme appeared in 2021 within German-speaking internet circles, building on the "Conni" illustrated book series (published notably by Carlsen), well known to German children since the 1990s for titles like "Conni geht zum Zahnarzt" or "Conni kommt in die Schule." Internet users spoofed this formula by imagining a cover or excerpt where Conni "discovers the internet," playing on the mismatch between the series' educational tone and the reality of the web. The edit circulated as a modified image, shared across German-speaking social media in 2021, becoming a template that later spawned other "Conni discovers..." variants.
