In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Man bringe den Spritzwein” is a rare card of the German Memes pack, number 284 of the collection, and the 39th best-known meme of its 300 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Man bringe den Spritzwein” meme mean?
The joke lives in the clash between a ceremonial, old-fashioned turn of phrase and an everyday drink. People use it to order with mock grandeur, to open the aperitif among friends, or to cut short a conversation that drags on. It also works as a caption under a terrace or buffet photo. It lands because it turns a casual gesture into a royal decree, with a Viennese flavour on top.
Where does the “Man bringe den Spritzwein” meme come from?
The line spread in Austria from a television moment in which Michael Häupl, long-time mayor of Vienna, received a farewell visit from comedian Peter Klien for the show Willkommen Österreich. The clip was later reposted on YouTube, including under the exact words of the line, and viewers turned it into a running joke. It is now a staple of German-language chats: people paste it untranslated in comments, group messages and photo captions.
