Where does the “Balthazar saw it coming” meme come from?
An actor dressed as Balthazar rode a float through Madrid’s Cabalgata de Reyes in early January 2019, waving at the crowd along the parade route. A camera caught the exact moment his expression flipped from joy to panic, with no public explanation ever given for the switch. Cadena SER republished the photo in January 2024, recalling how Spanish social media had linked his terrified face to everything that went wrong for the country that year, turning an ordinary street parade into a retroactive comic prophecy.
