The speaker already imagines the reward for a technical triumph while the object in view is held together by tape. People bring the sentence out in front of a makeshift repair, an unlikely rig, or an idea that only works in its author’s head. The irony lives in the gap between the inventor’s pride and the quality of the result. It can also be turned on oneself to joke about a failed hack. The line is long, which adds a pompous ring when quoted in full.
