“Messi por favor” meme: meaning, origin and common card

What does the “Messi por favor” meme mean?

“Por favor” means “please” in Spanish: the fan makes a polite request, and the star goes searching for the star. The meme rests on that mix-up, an identity escaping its owner. People post it to tease an absent-minded friend who does not recognise themselves in a question, someone hunting for something right under their nose, or any moment where the person being called for is already standing there.

Where does the “Messi por favor” meme come from?

The meme is built on a clip in which Lionel Messi looks around as though trying to find Messi, while the fan addressing him asks for him by name with an insistent “por favor”. The sequence was cut out so it could be captioned or renamed. The footballer's name, which fills the scene on its own, makes it a universal football joke: the most famous idol fails to connect the dots. The clip circulates as a short video and as a still frame.
