What does the “Next Time on Dragon Ball Z” meme mean?
This expression captures frustration with negligible narrative progress. It conveys the idea that the plot is going in circles, constantly promising significant developments for the future without delivering any immediate action. It is a humorous critique of excessive padding, where every episode feels endless before anything actually happens.
Where does the “Next Time on Dragon Ball Z” meme come from?
The phrase originates from the English dub of *Dragon Ball Z*, produced by Funimation starting in 1996. Narrators Doc Harris, and later Kyle Hebert, consistently used the line "Find out next time on Dragon Ball Z!" to preview upcoming events. This TV routine became a strong cultural marker for English-speaking fans. A YouTube video uploaded by user japester on October 28, 2007, marks an early pivot by explicitly parodying these lengths and narrative padding. Although the exact date it became a standardized internet meme is unknown, this documented YouTube source confirms its existence by 2007. The generalization of its use as an independent joke happened gradually without a single identified trigger event.
