What does the “Next” meme mean?
Saying “Next” means dismissing someone or something almost instantly, after barely a glance. It captures the speed-dating cruelty of 2000s reality TV: the awkward walk off the bus, the face of the lead who has already decided, and the one-word verdict. People use it to move on from a bad pitch, a weak joke or an unwanted offer. The meme plays on that uncomfortable moment when the suitor realises the date will not last long and that leaving with a little cash is the best outcome on offer.
Where does the “Next” meme come from?
Next is an American reality series of 288 episodes, each about 22 minutes long, which aired on MTV from May 4, 2005 to December 21, 2008 over six seasons. The format is speed dating. Suitors wait hidden inside a bus and step out one at a time to meet the lead. At any moment the lead can shout “Next” to eliminate whoever is on the date, and that person is paid a small amount for each minute spent outside the bus. The lead can also offer a second date, which the suitor accepts by giving up the money or declines to keep it. The show reached France on Virgin 17 on January 1, 2008, and later AB1 from September 30, 2013. Virgin 17 also ran a local version, Next Made in France, produced by Christophe Dechavanne. Clips of failed dates have kept circulating online since.
