“Ohh bouzelouf, mon bouzelouf chéri” meme: meaning, origin and rare card

What does the “Ohh bouzelouf, mon bouzelouf chéri” meme mean?

The sentence is an over-the-top love declaration addressed to a dish. It plays on the clash between a romantic tone, with the tender “mon chéri”, and a rather unexpected food, a lamb’s head. The €10.99 price on the card gives the meme its quirky advert feel. People use it to parody a commercial, to tease an exaggerated love of food, or to react to a photo of a meal. The rare, resonant word “bouzelouf” does a lot of the comic work on its own.

Where does the “Ohh bouzelouf, mon bouzelouf chéri” meme come from?

Bouzelouf is a roasted lamb’s or sheep’s head, a dish of Algerian cuisine often prepared around Eid al-Adha. La Feuille des Aurès is an Algerian restaurant in Villejuif, near Paris, which also runs a butcher’s counter. The place has featured in several creators’ videos: one YouTuber cooked a bouzelouf there with Grandingo, another toured its butcher shop to taste the dish, and a news video presented a man named Youssef as the “king of bouzelouf”. That is the setting in which the affectionate line to the dish spread, tied to the €10.99 price the card mentions. It now circulates as a twisted advert joke.
