What does the “Ouai François !” meme mean?
The meme thrives on contrast: a serious demonstration on one side, a man who gives himself over to dancing on the other. It stands for infectious joy and the urge to party in the middle of a tense moment. The shout “Ouai François !” works as encouragement for someone who goes for it without any shyness. Use it to salute a friend who dances the moment a track starts, or to caption a video where the mood flips into good humour.
Where does the “Ouai François !” meme come from?
The video shows a protester dancing to “La Boulette”, a track by French rapper Diam’s. The song came out as a single on 8 April 2006 and is taken from Dans ma bulle, her third studio album. It hit number one on the charts in France and in French-speaking Belgium, and went gold in the summer of 2006. Its official subtitle, “Génération nan nan”, stuck in memory, and the chorus is known to a whole generation, which is why the song still turns up as a soundtrack for street scenes. The meme ties the song to the image of a dancer in the middle of a march, and the cheer aimed at someone named François gives it its name.
