What does the “Penny Arcade” meme mean?
This term refers primarily to the online comic itself, but also evokes a specific style of humor: that of enthusiasts sharing their struggles with video games. It expresses geek camaraderie, technical frustrations, or absurd moments at conventions. Using it references a shared, nostalgic, and authentic culture, far from fleeting social media trends.
Where does the “Penny Arcade” meme come from?
The project began on November 18, 1998, on Loonygames.com, created by Jerry Holkins for writing and Mike Krahulik for art. They portray their own avatars: Tycho Brahe and Jonathan “Gabe” Gabriel. The format often relies on three panels showing dialogues between these two characters playing games. Popularity exploded thanks to the Penny Arcade (PAX) convention organized by the authors, which became a major event. The comic captures the evolution of the gaming community since the dawn of the Internet, establishing visual and narrative codes still recognized today.
