In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Pingu” is an epic card of the Memes FR pack, number 1404 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3496 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Pingu” meme mean?
“Noot noot” is Pingu’s signature honk. He speaks no human language, so tone does all the work, and online that makes the sound a catch-all: joy, annoyance, warning, bad mood. His beak shaped like a megaphone and his fixed stare became reaction images. People post it to end an argument, to show disapproval, or to answer someone who is talking too much with absurd authority.
Where does the “Pingu” meme come from?
Pingu was developed for Swiss broadcaster DRS by Otmar Gutmann and Erika Brueggemann, as a Swiss-British co-production. The clay characters and sets were built at a studio in Switzerland. Dialogue is in an invented tongue called Penguinese, improvised by Carlo Bonomi, which made the show easy to export without dubbing. It first aired in 1990. In 2022 a viral animation showed Pingu doing his “Noot noot” and staring into the distance while the Lacrimosa from Mozart’s Requiem played, turning the character into a meme again.
