What does the “"Never been his assistant"” meme mean?
The phrase captures the irony of a truth only recognized when facts brutally confirm it. It underscores the gap between a past denial and a reality discovered long after. The dominant emotion is cynicism toward temporal contradiction: the scoop seems to have had a ten-year head start on public awareness of the political scandal.
Where does the “"Never been his assistant"” meme come from?
The quote comes from an interview given by Penelope Fillon to the Sunday Telegraph on May 18, 2007. Filmed in a Parisian cafe by Kim Willsher, she stated she never served as her husband's assistant, François Fillon, who was then Prime Minister. This clip was rebroadcast by the program Envoyé spécial on France 2 on February 2, 2017. This airing coincided with the peak of the scandal regarding alleged fake jobs. The meme arises from juxtaposing this old declaration with current accusations. It highlights the precedence of the official version over recent media revelation. The exact source of the first meme publication remains unknown.
