What does the “RTFM” meme mean?
This initialism conveys frustration toward helplessness or laziness. Technicians, developers, and forum members use it to shut down trivial queries when the requester clearly skipped reading the provided guide, FAQ, or official instructions.
Where does the “RTFM” meme come from?
The exact inventor of the phrase remains unknown, but its earliest confirmed printed record dates back to 1979. It appeared in the table of contents of the LINPACK Users’ Guide, a manual for a Fortran linear algebra library, credited as “R.T.F.M. — Anonymous.” This confirms the phrase was already spreading across early computing circles. A popular rumor claiming it originated during World War II as military shorthand for “Read The Field Manual” lacks supporting evidence.
