What does the “Salam les khoyas” meme mean?
The punchline blends the Arabic greeting “salam” (peace, used as hello) with “khoyas” (brothers or buddies in North African dialect). The humor relies on the stark contrast between this warm street expression and Mirabel’s fragile, timid, and slow-paced comedic persona. Web users deploy the line as a playful, self-deprecating way to enter group chats or address a community online.
Where does the “Salam les khoyas” meme come from?
The catchphrase originates from Paul Mirabel’s performance at the 2022 Marrakech du Rire comedy festival. In his act, he joked about flying via Air Maroc and wandering through the local souk markets. Following television broadcasts and its availability on the streaming service 6play around late July 2022, clips of his routine gained traction. The quote further solidified its status as a pop-culture reference by becoming the title of the premiere episode of his mockumentary series “Paul” on Prime Video. While the exact social media post that sparked its viral meme status remains unrecorded, the greeting quickly became a widespread quote across French-speaking platforms.
