In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “Serious play” is a rare card of the Memes FR pack, number 5053 of the collection, and the 753rd best-known meme of its 3497 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Serious play” meme mean?
The meme marks the moment someone switches mode and plays all out, no jokes. It can be sincere, to salute real effort, or ironic, to tease a person who takes a harmless game far too seriously. Players say it before an important round, a dare or a bet among friends.
Where does the “Serious play” meme come from?
The card name is an English expression, and its description names no author or date. What is certain is the logic of the meme: a deliberately grave statement placed over a game scene, which creates a comic contrast. The encyclopedia notes that a meme travels through imitation and variation, and that is what happened here, with the phrase reused over different images. French-speaking audiences adopted it untranslated, like a small battle cry for players.
