Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “Sous Tartiflette” meme mean?
The meme is a passionate defence of a comfort dish against people who mock it. It is used to justify a taste you own, to laugh at a food argument that is heating up, or to answer, in a mock-teacherly tone, someone who has not got it. The humour comes from a calm, almost philosophical sentence applied to melted cheese. It suits winter evenings, shared meals and comment threads about regional cooking.
Where does the “Sous Tartiflette” meme come from?
The card quotes the line “C'est bon aussi la tartiflette, faut le comprendre” and points to the dish it praises. According to Wikipedia, tartiflette, invented in Haute-Savoie, is a gratin of potatoes, onions and bacon, baked with reblochon cheese. On YouTube, many videos show how to make it, from the traditional Savoyard version to chef recipes. The meme grew around this hugely popular French dish, a symbol of winter meals and togetherness. The exact author and date of the original line remain to be confirmed; what is certain is its use as a comic defence of a beloved dish.
