In MyMemeCards, the meme card game, “OIIA Cat” is an epic card of the Memes World series 77, number 22934 of the collection, and the 64th best-known meme of its 138 cards. Here is what the meme means, where it comes from, and how to get its card.
What does the “OIIA Cat” meme mean?
The joke comes from repetition and an audio-visual mismatch, not from a line with a clear meaning. A rotating cat paired with a nonsensical vocalization feels strange, hypnotic, or deliberately absurd. People use it to react to surreal moments, suggest that a thought is going around in circles, or give a video an oddly repetitive comic mood.
Where does the “OIIA Cat” meme come from?
The cat model is sometimes identified as Ethel, a rescued gray cat. A photograph of the animal was reportedly posted in January 2019 in the Facebook group Cats On Catnip Group. The “oiia oiia” sound is said to have appeared separately in 2021, in a recorded conversation shared by Turkish TikToker @dr.frex, where two people vocalized a melody at different speeds. The cat and sound were reportedly combined in 2023, following an edit posted on Bilibili in China. The exact date of that first upload and its creator are unknown. Some accounts place a video or remix in April 2023, but do not establish whether it was the original edit. The vocalization has no established translation; it functions as a nonsensical sound. Musical remixes and other versions followed, though their precise origins are unclear.
