What does the “Technique de self-défense” meme mean?
The image expresses the gap between theory and practice, or ineffectiveness against real danger. It is used to mock a strategy that seems logical but fails miserably, or to highlight helplessness in the face of aggression. The dominant emotion is irony: one laughs at the contradiction between the expert's authority and the disastrous result. It is a gentle critique of clumsy solutions.
Where does the “Technique de self-défense” meme come from?
The meme relies on demonstration videos by Franck Ropers, a recognized French specialist in martial arts and self-defense, particularly in pencak silat. Archives show his classes as early as April 2008, with bare-handed techniques. A notable broadcast occurred via madmoiZelle in February 2018 and Dailymotion in October 2018. However, no source confirms the specific video that went viral or its exact creation date. The initial context remains unclear, but the association between Ropers' name and comedic failure situations allowed the format's spread.
