The meme contrasts the usual enthusiasm of techno fans with the subject’s ultra-nerdy, emotionless response. It expresses a passionate but comically cold devotion to a specific music genre. People use it to mock or celebrate the geeky side of audiophiles who prioritize their favorite music with religious dedication but zero visible emotion.
Where does the “Techno Interests Me” meme come from?
The photograph was taken by Liisa Jokinen in October 2011 in central Helsinki. It features Antti Salonen, a Finnish DJ. On October 26, 2011, Jokinen published the image on her street style website Hel-Looks with the caption “Techno interests me”. The photo gained traction when shared on Reddit in r/electronicmusic on January 25, 2012. According to Salonen, he came up with this ironic answer because he thought his friends would find it funny. The format later inspired variants where characters judge party guests’ music tastes snobbishly, similar to the “I Wish I Was At Home Playing Video Games” meme.
